If you’re looking for an energy-efficient and cost-effective roofing material for your flat roof, TPO roof systems may have crossed your radar. This thin and reflective roof system is growing in popularity because of the many advantages it provides. So, what is TPO roofing, and is it right for your roof? Keep reading our guide to find out more!

What is TPO Roofing?

TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) roofing is a single-ply roofing membrane used to cover flat roofs. Single-ply membranes are sheets of rubber and synthetics which can be chemically adhered, ballasted, or mechanically fastened to create a layer of protection on your home. The sheets can be 10, 12, or 20 feet wide.

These TPO membranes consist of a smattering of different types of rubber that are usually a combination of ethylene-propylene and polypropylene. These are known for their elasticity and durability. A fabric-reinforced scrim is added to the center of the membranes for added strength and increased performance. If installed and maintained properly, you can get around 25 years out of your TPO roofing system.

Benefits of TPO Roofing System

Energy Efficient

TPO roofing is generally white, highly reflective, and energy-efficient. The white reflective surface exceeds EPA Energy Star requirements. TPO roofing will effectively reflect UV rays, preventing them from leaking into your household and forcing your AC from working harder to maintain a comfortable temperature. During the warmer months, utility consumption reduces while your home remains cool.

Flexible

TPO is a highly flexible roofing membrane that can withstand normal thermal expansion and maintain its integrity through natural roof movement. This flexibility makes it more resistant to punctures, tears, and damage from moving and settling.

Environmentally Friendly

In addition, TPO membranes are made entirely from recyclable materials. When your TPO roof reaches the end of its lifespan, it can be used to make new membranes, reducing carbon emissions. What’s more, TPO does not contain environmentally-harmful chemicals, such as chlorine.

Easy to install

Furthermore, TPO is lightweight, flexible, and usually comes in wide sheets which are easier to carry around. These properties make TPO easier to install than some of its counterparts. Faster installation time means less disruption to your family’s daily routine.

Cost Effective

TPO is one of the least expensive materials for flat roofing. The ease of installation, low maintenance requirements, and durability makes it a cost-effective material in the long run.

Strong and Durable

The hot air-welded seams of a TPO are strong and flexible. They are up to four times stronger than EPDM seams which mainly use adhesive or tape. Because of how the seams are melded together, they stand up very well to potential leaks.

TPO roofing is highly resistant to algae, bacteria growth, mold, and debris buildup. The flexible membrane allows the roofing system to withstand tears, punctures, and impact damage.
